    Abstract

    The objectives of this research are to investigate: (1) whether or not there is an effect of thematic learning on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One; (2) whether or not there is a correlation between the learning motivation and the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One; and (3) whether or not there is an interaction of effect between the thematic learning and the learning motivation on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One. This research is an experimental one. It was conducted from February to July 2010. The population of the research was all of the midfery students of the Faculty of Health Science, Surabaya Muhammadyah University. Its samples consisted of two parralel classes of students in Grade I in Semester 2, i.e. Grade IA as an experimental group and Grade IB as a control group. Because its population was small, it did not use a certain sampling technique, but took all of the students as the samples of the research. The data of the research were gathered by using questionnaire of learning motivation and test of learning achievement. The data were analyzed by using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the significance level of α = 0.05 . The results of the analysis are as follows: (1) there is a difference of effect between the thematic learning model and the non-thematic learning model on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One as indicated by F0 = 114.549 > Ftable 3.94, which is supported by the mean of thematic learning = 68.3 > that of the non-thematic learning = 50.59; (2) there is a difference of effect between the high learning motivation and the low learning motivation on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One as shown by F0 = 62.773> Ftable = 3.94, which is supported by the mean of the high learning motivation = 65.92 > that of the low learning motivation = 52.98; (3) there is a significant interaction of effect between the learning model and the learning motivation on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One as revealed by the result of the analysis with the two-way analysis of variance (F0 = 8.779 > Ftable = 3.94. Based on the results of the analysis, a conclusion I drawn that all of the proposed hypotheses in the research are verified; the thematic learning has a better effect than the non-thematic learning on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One, and the high learning motivation has a better effect than the low learning motivation on the learning achievement in Midwifery Care One. Therefore, the learning is more appropriate to be approached with the thematic learning model accompanied with the high learning motivation.
