    Abstract

    This research aimed: (1) to find out the development procedure and to produce a guided inquiry-based module product to empower the student critical thinking ability in ecosystem material; (2) to find out the feasibility of guided inquiry-based module developed to empower the student critical thinking ability in ecosystem material; and (3) to find out the effectiveness of guided inquiry based module developed to empower the student critical thinking ability in ecosystem material. This study was a research and development referring to Borg and Gall. Module design was developed into draft 1. Then Draft module 1 undertook preliminary field test validated by expert and practitioner validator, and then revised for the first time based on validator’s recommendation and input. From the revision, Draft module II was obtained to be used for limited field trial with 10 students of SMA Negeri Kebakkramat as the subject of trial, and then the module draft was revised for the second time based on students’ recommendation and input into Draft Module III thereafter used in operational field test in SMA Negeri 1 Karanganyar in the X Science 4 grade consisting of 38 students. The effectiveness of module on learning activity and critical thinking ability was analyzed using gain score normalized for pretest-posttest of actual trial class. Having been revised into finished product, this module was then distributed to the Public Senior High Schools throughout Karanganyar Regency. The result of research was as follows: (1) the guided inquiry-based module in ecosystem material to empower student critical thinking ability was developed by referring to Borg and Gall; (2) the quality of guided inquiry-based module in ecosystem material to empower student critical thinking ability showed good category based on expert and practitioner validators; and (3) the quality of guided inquiry-based module in ecosystem material to empower student critical thinking ability was effective that could be seen from N-gain score of 0.48 for critical thinking ability and N-gain score of 0.39 for learning achievement, both of which showed moderate category.
