    Abstract

    Hypercholesterolemia is a condition in which blood cholesterol levels were over than normal so it can increase the risk of coronary heart disease. One of the alternative efforts to reduce high cholesterol levels is consuming functional food continually. Kimpul (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) is one of the types of plants that potentially exploited as a functional food ingredient. This research aimed to determine the effects of feeding with kimpul tubers on total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL levels of hypercholesterolemia mice. This research was a purely experimental which used completely randomized design. Fifteen mice were divided into 3 groups: the first group was fed a high cholesterol diet and standard feed, the second group was fed a high cholesterol diet, standard feed, and 0,026 mg/20 gBW/day of simvastatin, the third group was fed a high cholesterol diet and boiled kimpul tubers ad libitum. The high cholesterol diet was a mixture of quail egg yolk, pork oil, and waste cooking oil in 3:2:1 ratio. The induction of early high cholesterol diet was done for 14 days then continued with the treatments until day 28th. Cholesterol levels measured on day 0, 14th, and 28th. Data were analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) continued by Honesty Significant Different (HSD) Tukey test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that feeding with kimpul tubers could increase HDL and reduced LDL levels of hypercholesterolemia mice with significantly difference to the simvastatin as an anti-hypercholesterol drug, but did not give reduction effect significantly on total cholesterol levels.
