    Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of the volume fraction of fly ash (FA) particle on the burning endurance (burning rate and surface burning) of the particulate composite FA-ripoxy R-802. Flame resistance resin ripoxy R-802 was used as matrix for this composite. FA particle/tile powder (waste of coal combustion) was sieved for particle size ≤ 75 μm (passing trough from mesh 200). The FA powder was heated in an oven at 105 oC for 45 minutes. Then FA powder was mixed with resin ripoxy R-802, the content of FA powder was varied into resin for 0-50% composition. The composite was made by hand lay-up method with press mould. Composite was given finishing treatment and post curing treatment in oven with 80 oC temperature for 120 minute. The burning endurance on the composite was conducted based on the standard of ASTM D-635 for burning rate and ASTM D-5048 for surface burning. The indicator of burning rate was determined by the data of time to ignition (TTI) and rate of burning (ROB). The indicator of surface burning was determined by the test bar may have or may not have burn trough. The results of this research shows the addition volume fraction of FA improves the burning endurance of the composite of FA-ripoxy R-802 as indicated in burning rate by the increase in TTI and the decrease of ROB. In the surface burning, the addition volume fraction of FA decreases the decomposition of the composite of FA-ripoxy R-802 as indicated by the decrease in the height of corvex and the decrease in the diameter of corvex. Keyword: fly ash, ripoxy R-802, burning rate, time to ignition, rate of burning, surface burning.
