    Abstract

    Nowadays, the number of vehicles in Indonesia keeps growing up, including in Surakarta. It can cause congestion. Applying traffic signals at the cross section is the solution to decrease the congestion, moreover in urban area. Veteran Street is a major road with three near cross sections, and there is a group of vehicles (platoon) which delays at each cross section, so if it is coordinated well, the movement of vehicles there can pass through those three traffic signals by a determined velocity (green wave speed). The research was performed to determine the cycle time of traffic lights, the performance of all cross sections along Veteran street before and after coordinated, and the value of green wave velocity. Location of the study is along Veteran street, at the cross section of Kapten Mulyadi, Sudiarto Brigjend, and Yos Sudarso Surakarta. The method to calculate the performance of the cross section is based on Highway Capacity Manual Indonesia (MKJI) 1997. Data retrieved at peak hour (7:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.-17:00 pm) on weekdays. The existing cycle time of Kapten Mulyadi (86 seconds), Brigjend Sudiarto (96 seconds), and Yos Sudarso (99 seconds), while the cycle time after coordination is equal to 96 seconds for the three cross sections. The calculation result of the performance of the coordinated cross section on major roads can be seen that the degree of saturation on the condition that has been coordinated decreased on average by 19.55 % at the morning and 8,03% in afternoon. Long queues at the conditions that have been coordinated decreased on average by 12,09 % at the morning and 8,88% in afternoon. The amount of delay on the condition that has been coordinated decreased on average by 28,34 % at the morning and 20,22 % at the afternoon. Green wave velocity to pass through the cross section of Kapten Mulyadi-Yos Sudarso and vice versa is 30 km /h on the morning traffic, and 25 km /h for the afternoon traffic.
