    Abstract

    The purpose of this research was to improve the understanding of fighting against the colonialism in social studies subject using cooperative learning type Group Investigation model on fifth grade students of SDN Paulan, Colomadu, Karanganyar in the academic year of 2012/2013. The type of the research was classroom action research (CAR) which carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consist of four phases, there are planning, action, observation, and reflection. Subject of this research were the fifth grade students of SDN Paulan, Colomadu, Karanganyar in the academic year 2012/2013 that amount of 17 students. The data collecting technique that used were documentation, interviews, observation, and test. The analyting data technique which used was interactive analysis model that conducted three component, that were data reduction, data display, and drawing conclution or verification. The data validating technique used in this research were data triangulation and method triangulation. The result of research showed that using cooperative learning type Group Investigation model could improve the understanding of fighting against the colonialism concepts in Social Studies Subject on fifth grade students of SDN Paulan. Improvement of the concepts understanding was proved with the increase of value in each cycle. The average of concepts understanding value in pre cycle was 50,64 with 35,29% in classical learning completeness; in first cycle increased become 70,82 with 70,58% in classical learning completeness; and in second cycle increased again become 83,11 with 94,11% in classical learning completeness. The conclusion of this research is using cooperative learning type Group Investigation can improve the understanding of fighting against the colonialism concepts in Social Studies Subject on fifth grade students of SD Paulan, Colomadu, Karanganyar in the academic year of 2012/2013.
