    Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to obtain a conception of the implementation of the Social Science learning at Grade VII of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city; (2) to develop the COLESTVIA model as an effort to internalize the character values in the Social Science learning at Grade VII of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city; and (3) to investigate the effectiveness of the COLESTVIA model as an effort to internalize the character values in the Social Science learning at Grade VII of Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city. The research and development method was done in three principal phases, namely: introductory study, model development, and model testing respectively. The data of the research were gathered through observation, in-depth interview, questionnaire, and documentation. The data of the introductory study were analyzed by using the qualitative approach, and the model testing was done through experiment with the quantitative method. The difference between the effectiveness of the COLESTVIA learning model and that of the Lectures-Varied learning model was studied and tested by using the t test. The results of the research show that 1) The Social Science learning at Junior Secondary Schools in Surakarta city is still heterogeneous but limited to transfer of knowledge, and the learning evaluation is still focused on the cognitive aspect, whereas the curriculum of the Social Science learning demands that it is implemented integratedly, the objectives much touch the knowledge, attitude, and skill aspects; therefore, the COLESTVIA learning model is developed. 2) The draft of the COLESTVIA learning model as an effort to internalize the character values following the validation of a team of experts and practitioners was experimented at State Junior Secondary School 19 of Surakarta. The result of the experiment can be understood and implemented by the teachers and students. Following the experiment, the model was then exposed to extensive experiment through the quasi experiment at two schools, namely: State Junior Secondary School 2 of Surakarta and Junior Secondary School Al M of Surakarta. 3) The effectiveness testing of the COLESTVIA learning model was done at State Junior Secondary School 9 of Surakarta, State Junior Secondary School 24 of Surakarta, and Junior Secondary School K of Surakarta. The result of the testing shows that the COLESTVIA learning model is shown to have a more significant effect on the learning achievement and to strengthen the students’ character more compared to the lectures-varied learning model. Thus, it can be concluded that the students with the COLESTVIA model have a better learning achievement and a stronger attitude on the character values than those with the lectures -varied learning model. In other words, the COLESTVIA model is more effective than the lectures -varied learning model. Keywords: Social Science learning, learning models, competency, character values, and personality.
