    Abstract

    ABSTRACT The aims of this research were to synthesis carboxymethyl chitosan with various chloro acetic acid concentration and temperature reaction, investigate its effect on cation exchage capacity, preparation composite membranes carboxymethyl chitosan/ZnO/PVA for fuel cells and study factors which affect swelling degree and thermal stability membranes include crosslinking agent (borate) and duration. Carboxymethyl chitosan was synthesized by reaction chitosan with chloro acetic. Cation exchange capacity was determined by acid base titration. Composit membranes were prepared by phase inversion method. Crosslinking was determined using membranes immersing method. Swelling degree test had been done by immersing membranes in the water for 24 hours. Thermal stability was detected by termogravimetric method. The presence of concentration and temperature factors on cation exchange capacity was analyzed with Anova test. Carboxymethyl chitosan has strong FTIR adsorption of carboxyl group (-COO-) in 1606,70 cm-1 dan 1444,68 cm-1. The increasing of chloro acetic acid concentration and reaction temperature decreased cation exchage capacity. Carboxymethyl chitosan was amorf character and lower thermal stability than chitosan. Crosslinking carboxymethyl chitosan with borate decreased swelling degree and increased termal stability of composite membranes. Low swelling degree and high thermal stability of composite membranes indicated that had potential as membranes for fuel cells application.
