    Abstract

    Rice is the main food of Indonesian. However, in rice cultivation are still have many problem. Brown planthoppers (BPH) is one of the most serious insect pest of rice. Various efforts have not been able to overcome this problem. So we need a more precise effort to overcoming it, that effort is by increasing plant resistance through the addition of compound silicate (Si) in the soil. The Addition of zeolite silicate (Si) could induce plant resistance against BPH. This research was supposed to study the effect of zeolite addition to the presence of BPH and the effect on the growth and yield of rice plant. The research was carried out on May until November 2012 in the rice fields in Joho, Mojolaban, Sukoharjo. The research was held in Split Plot Design, conventional farming (without the addition of zeolite) (Z0) and the addition of zeolite (Z1) as main plot. Subplot (sub plot) is rice varieties, consists of four levels Inpari 13 (V1), Ciherang (V2), Sunggal (V3) and Batang Pariaman (V4). The results of the research showed that zeolite addition (900 kg / ha) on some rice varieties don’t give effect to the existence of imago’s brown planthopper (BPH), but showed a trend that zeolite affect the existence of BPH nymphs. The highest average population of BPH’s imagos and nymphs found in the conventional cultivation without zeolite addition in Inpari 13 variety (8,56 individuals per hills), and the lowest average population of BPH found in the conventional cultivation with zeolite addition in Sunggal variety (4,4 individuals per hills) at 6 weeks after planting. The highest damage percentage of the crop found in the conventional cultivation with zeolite addition in Ciherang, Sunggal and Batang Pariaman varieties (90%), while the lowest damage percentage of the crop found in the conventional cultivation without zeolite addition in Inpari 13 variety (55,9%). With those conditions (BPH’s population and the percentage of damage), the conventional cultivation technique without zeolites addition in Inpari 13 variety showed the highest plant growth and best results.
