    Abstract

High content of water in clay soil causes low shear strength, This soil needs improvement in order to increase its shear strength. Improvement on clay soil can be done by reducing its water content, and affect its shear strength. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of electroosmosis usage on shear strength of clay soil. This research used a small scale physical model electroosmosis test in the laboratory, with and without preloading. The test was performed by electric potential in the clay through the positive electrode (anode) and the negative electrode (cathode), where the cathode was provided by hollow for water outlet. The existence of electric potential caused the water in saturated clay soil flow from the anode to the cathode and finally drained out through the hole cathode. Preloading was conducted by providing an initial load of soil in the form of soil deposits over the clay with a thickness of 1,3 cm. Based on model testing laboratory, concluded that the use electroosmosis on clay soil was able to improve the cohesion (c) and the internal friction angle of clay soil. Cohesion increased by 9,52-118,75 % and the internal friction angle by 4,98- 8,85 % after applying of 3 volt electric potential. The higher the electric potential, the better improvement on cohesion and internal friction angle of clay soil. The use preloading significantly affected on shear strength clay improvement, compared to the same case without preloading. The larger of the electric potential applied, the more effective usage of preloading. Keywords : clay soil, electroosmosis, cohesion, friction angle, preloading
