    Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to find out: (1) whether or not the problem solving method provided the student’s math learning achievement better than the lecturing method did in fraction subject matter, (2) whether or not the students with high learning interest had better learning achievement than those with moderate one, the students with moderate learning interest had better learning achievement than those with low one, and the students with high learning interest had better learning achievement than those with low one, and (3) on each learning method, which are learning interest that give better learning achievement, is the high better than the moderate one, the moderate better than the low one, and the high better than the low one (4) on each category of learning interest, which are learning method that give better learning achievement. This study was a quasi-experimental research. The population of research was all students of VII graders of SMP Negeri 16 Surakarta in the school year of 2012/2013 consisting of 6 classes. The sample taken using cluster random sampling technique. The sample that used was 2 classes with total of 2 classes is 60 students, the VII-E grade as the experiment class and the VII-B grade as the control class. Methods of collecting data used were documentation, questionnaire and test. Technique of analyzing data used was a two-way variance analysis with different cells. In this research was done equilibrium test with t-test. The data employed for equilibrium test was taken using t-test. The data used for equilibrium test was taken from the documentation of students’ National Final Examination score for math subject of experiment and control tests. Before conducting equilibrium test and analysis prerequisite test, the normality test was done first using Lilliefors and homogeneity test using Bartlett. Considering the result of research, it could be concluded that: (1) the problem solving learning method provide the learning achievement as good as the lecturing method did in fractional operation subject matter, (2) the students with high learning interest had better learning achievement than those with moderate one, the students with moderate learning interest had learning achievement as good as those with low one, the students with high learning interest had better learning achievement than those with low, (3) in the learning with either problem solving or lecturing method, the students with high learning interest had learning achievement better than those with both moderate and low learning interest, the students with moderate learning interest had learning achievement as good as those with low one, (4) on each category of learning interest, whether high or moderate or low, both the students attending the learning with problem solving method and those attending lecturing method had equally good learning achievement. Keywords: problem solving, lecturing method, learning interest, fraction
