    Abstract

Pumpkin or C. moschata can be used as an alternative of food mainly because of the carbohydrate content. This plant could grow in quite difference habitat, ranging from a couple hundred meters to until seventeen hundred meters above sea level (a s l). Due to the nutricious content as well as the ability to grow in the diversity of environmental conditions, these plants were planted worldwide. This study compared the diversity of three varieties of C. moschata plants based on morphology, protein and isozyme band patterns. In order to look at whether any relationship between the morphological characters and the genetic data (isozyme and protein pattern), poly acrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) was used. Two enzymes namely the peroxidase and esterase were choosen to characterize the band patterns of leaf samples, while the commassie brilliant blue was used to stain the protein taken from the seeds. The results showed that there was a good relationship between morphological variation especially the leaf which was supported with appearence of isozyme and protein band patterns. This first report documented that molecular data come up in accordence with the morphological character in supporting the excistence of variety of C. moschata.
