    Abstract

    Key words: environmental stress, medicinal plant, secondary metabolite The medicinal plant which is has multi-functional but becoming scarce as market demand continues to rise. Therefore, its needed to improve cultivation in order to increase the secondary metabolite content. One way of increasing the secondary metabolite content is by modified of their agroecosystem. This experiment aims to study the effect of different levels of water stress intensity on growth and the secondary metabolite content of root and flower simplisia of medicinal plants. The experiment in the first year consist of two sub-experiment, which were (1) effect of water stress intensity on root simplisia of medicinal plant, which consisted of three levels namely 100%, 60% and 20% of field capacity , and (2) effect of water stress intensity on flower simplisia of medicinal plant , wich consisted of four levels namely 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% of field capacity. The research variables observed were plant growth variables and secondary metabolite content variable. The results of the experiment showed that the reduction of the growth observed at the almost all water stress intensity levels treated, while the secondary metabolite content increased with treatment factors of water stress intensity. The level of water stress at 20% field capacity exhibited the highest reserpine content of root simplisia of pule pandak plant , while the level of 75% field capacity exhibited the highest anthocyanine content of flower simplisia of red rossele plant.
