    Abstract

    Many conservation researches have been done but there have not been much found research about how much the contribution of canopy on hydrology system. The aim of this research was to evaluate canopy character of some trees that contributed on soil surface prevention, furthermore to find estimation model of canopy density as the approach of raindrops controller. The research was arranged in Bengawan Solo watershed Central of Java from November 2008 until May 2009, based on survey method on around 25 years old of Teak (Tectona grandis L), Pine (Pinus mercusii L) and Mahogany (Swietania mahagoni L). Ten trees were chosen from every species based on purposive random and be completed with gauge of through fall and stem flow. The canopy height, branches number and canopy width were used as the base of canopy density index. Pine has the biggest of canopy density index (0.87), and be followed by Mahogany (0.50) and Teak (0.23) as the smallest. The canopy raindrops from Pine, Mahogany and Teak were 7.25 mm, 8.18 mm and 14.82 mm respectively (at 20.48 mm.day-1 of precipitation). It showed the good capability of Pine’s canopy for controlling raindrops velocity. Key words : canopy density index, raindrops velocity Penelitian konservasi telah banyak dilakukan namun belum banyak penelitian tentang seberapa besar kontribusi tajuk pohon dalam mendukung kinerja sistem hidrologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi karakter tajuk pohon yang berperan pada perlindungan permukaan tanah, selanjutnya mencari model estimasi kepadatan tajuk sebagai pendekatan perilaku tetesan air hujan yang mempengaruhi kondisi permukaan tanah. Penelitian dilaksanakan di DAS Bengawan Solo wilayah Jawa Tengah, bulan Nopember 2008-Mei 2009, menggunakan metode survei pada beberapa jenis pohon berumur sekitar 25 tahun (Jati, Pinus dan Mahoni). Setiap jenis dipilih sepuluh pohon secara purposive random dan dilengkapi alat pengukur stem flow dan through fall. Tinggi tajuk, jumlah cabang dan lebar tajuk dipakai sebagai dasar pemodelan kepadatan tajuk (IKT). Pinus mempunyai IKT terbesar (0,87), Mahoni (0,50) dan Jati terkecil (0,23). Tajuk Pinus menghasilkan tetesan air hujan 7,25 mm, Mahoni 8,18 mm, Jati 14,82 mm pada curah hujan sebesar 20,48 mm.hari-1. Ini mencerminkan tajuk Pinus berkemampuan baik mengendalikan kecepatan tetesan air hujan. Kata kunci : indeks kepadatan tajuk, kecepatan tetesan air hujan
