    Desi Widyastuti. K8409015. THE MEANING OF RITUAL IN REOG PONOROGO TRADITIONAL ART PERFORMANCE (A Case Study in Wagir Lor Village, Ngebel Subdistrict, Ponorogo Regency). Thesis, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Surakarta Sebelas Maret University, 2013. This research aimed to find out: (1) the ritual meaning of Reog Ponorogo traditional art performance, (2) the reason why the rite before Reog performance is still preserved in current modernization age, (3) the change occurring in Reog Ponorogo traditional art in current modernization age. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with case study research type. The primary data was obtained through observation and in-depth interview, while secondary data was obtained through documentation. The sampling techniques used were purposive sampling and snowball sampling. Data validation employed was triangulation and review informant techniques. The process of analyzing data used was an interactive model of analysis, encompassing data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Considering the result of research, the following conclusions could be drawn. (1) The ritual meaning of Reog Ponorogo traditional art as the public’s attempt to avoid the barriers that might occur during performance by providing sesaji (offerings) as the sense of recognizing (ngajeni) the existence of spirit that the public believed as the guard of barongan (bamboo trees). (2) The reasons why the rite before Reog performance was still preserved in this current modernization age were (a) the public still believed in the myths circulating about the mysticism and the terribleness of Wagir Lor Village Reog, (b) the public expected security and wanted to avoid the unexpected barriers during Reog art performance, (c) the public still wanted to maintain the customs that their ancestors had undertaken since a long time ago as the form of national cultural wealth. (3) The changes occurring in Reog Ponorogo traditional art in this current modernization age included (a) the change of its name from Reyog to Reog, (b) the change of warok character currently from that previously, and (c) the change of gemblak character into jathil dancer. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui: (1) Makna ritual dalam pementasan seni tradisi Reog Ponorogo (2) Alasan mengapa ritual sebelum pementasan Reog masih dilestarikan di era modernisasi sekarang ini (3) Perubahan yang terjadi di seni tradisi Reog Ponorogo di era modernisasi sekarang ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian studi kasus. Data primer diperoleh melalui observasi dan wawancara mendalam sedangkan data sekunder diperoleh melalui dokumentasi. Teknik pengambilan cuplikan melalui purposive sampling dan snowball sampling. Uji validitas data menggunakan teknik triangulasi dan review informan. Proses analisis data menggunakan model analisis interaktif yakni tahap pengumpulan data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan (1) Makna ritual dalam pementasan seni tradisi Reog Ponorogo yaitu sebagai suatu usaha masyarakat untuk menghindari halangan-halangan yang bisa terjadi saat pementasan dengan memberikan sesaji sebagai rasa pengakuan (ngajeni ) terhadap keberadaan roh yang dipercaya masyarakat sebagai penunggu barongan (2) Alasan mengapa ritual sebelum pementasan Reog masih dilestarikan di era modernisasi sekarang ini yaitu (a) Masyarakat masih percaya kepada cerita atau mitos yang beredar tentang kemistisan dan keangkeran Reog Desa Wagir Lor, (b) Masyarakat berharap mendapatkan sebuah keselamatan dan terhindar dari halangan-halangan yang tidak diinginkan saat pementasan seni Reog berlangsung, (c) Masyarakat masih ingin mempertahankan adat istiadat yang sudah sejak dulu dilakukan oleh para leluhur mereka sebagai bentuk khasanah kekayaan budaya bangsa. (3) Perubahan yang terjadi di seni tradisi Reog Ponorogo di era modernisasi sekarang ini yaitu (a) Perubahan nama seni Reyog menjadi seni Reog (b) Perubahan peran tokoh warok dahulu dan sekarang (c) Perubahan peran tokoh gemblak menjadi penari jathil.
