    Abstract

    this research is aimed at obtaned comprehensive desciption on the learning of art and culture in some state junior high schools in surakarta. in a narrower sense, this research is oriented to obtain empirical data on the roles of art and culture subject matter. this research was done in SMP negeri 1, 3, 4, 5 of surakarta by applying desciptive qualitative approach. the art and culture is purposedl direted to improve student creative and appriciative abilities which in then excepted o simulate and optimize their creative potentials. this concept must be fully acknowledge by teachers, co that the teaching learing of art and culture not only focuseson teacher giving materials merely oriented on cognitive learning and technical skill, the result shows that in general the art and culture hasnt yet reached addition. teacher tend to conduct theaching learning to only reach the competence student and basic competence, in other words teachng is only a matter of formality. therefore it is recommended that the decision of choosing the appropriate theacing model and method is based on the goal of art and culture learning, namely to optimize student, appriciative and creative abilities, so they can have create new and original ideas.
