    Abstract

The research has been conducted for two years. In the first year, a survey to identify the characteristic of the linguistic structure, discourse structure, and narration unsure in mathematic word problems which are relevant to elementary school students in rural area was conducted. Furthermore, the development of word problem model prototype was also conducted. The research subjects are grade 1, 2, and 3 students of elementary school in Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Boyolali, Sragen, and Klaten district areas. The data collection was done by both individual and classical methods of interview which are followed by descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative analysis. The result is explained as follows. Firstly, linguistic element that becomes the source of students’ understanding problem contains semantic element plus and minus which are not a pair of antonym in a particular problem, the use of word “more than”, “less than”, “sum”, and interrogative sentence without unit. Secondly, the discourse structure which is interesting to students is discourse with the presence of place and time setting and actor i n the initial condition component. The use of more than 2 actors in the interrogative component becomes one of difficulties faced by students in understanding the word problems. Thirdly, the story themes of interest are those which include daily activities in family, playground, and school environment. Hence the place setting should be relevant with those three kinds of environment. Actors in the story who are interesting for them are those who have relation with kid movie actor, animal story, and people who have familiarity relationship. The use of actor in the word problem will cause more difficulties to students if the actors’ names are difficult to be pronounced or if the animals in the story are not familiar with them. Fiction is more desirable by students of early stage of education (e.g. grade 1 and 2 of elementary school). The difficulties in understanding the linguistic structure could be minimized by optimally implementing the discourse structure and narration unsure which are suitable for students.
