    Abstract

    Shofiatuz Zuhroh (S8104038). Quantum Learning Approach and Self- Confidence and Their Effect toward the Students’s Basic Competency on English on the State Senior High School in Surakarta. Thesis. Surakarta: Educational Technology, Postgraduate Program, Sebelas Maret University, 2006. The purposes of this research are to know: 1) the difference of effect of the quantum learning approach toward the student’s basic competency on English, 2) the difference of effect of the students’ self-confidence toward the students’ basic competency on English. 3) the interaction of the instruction approach and self-confidence toward the student’s basic competency on English. The research is an experimental research. The population of the research is the students of the State General High School in Surakarta. The technique of the sampling is purposive cluster random sampling. The sample of the research concists of 80 students which represents the population. The instrumens used for collecting the data consist of the test of basic competency test, and the questionaire of self confidence. The validities used are content and item validities. To test the item validity of the objective form of the basic competency test, the Product Moment correlation formula from Pearson is employed, and to test the reliability, the Spearman Brown formula is used (ro: 0,98454). Meanwhile to evaluate the test validity of the questionnaire of self confidence, the Product Moment correlation formula from Pearson is employed, and to test the reliability, the Alpha Cronbvach formula is employed (ro: 0,942). To analyze the data, the writer applies the analyze of variance (ANAVA) two ways at significance level at 0,05 The data analyze results of the student’s basic competence show: 1) there is the difference of effect between quantum learning approach toward student’s basic competency on English (Fo: 4.0506 > Ft : 3.97;) 2). there is the difference of effect between the students’ self-confidence toward the students’ basic competency on English ( Fo : 4.6174 > Ft : 3.97). 3). There is an interaction between the effect of instruction approach and self confidence toward students’ basic competency on English (Fo: 4.3374 > Ft:3.97) Considering the results of this research, the researcher proposes some suggestions; First, the students’ basic competency on English can be improved through the attemp in applying quantum approach; second, in selecting and utilizing learning approach, teachers should consider the students’ self confidence.
