    Abstract

    Turning tool sharpening process should consider tool angles determination becouse it would influence life of the tool wich was indicated by it’s temperature. In the case study at the laboratorium of Perencanaan dan Perancangan Produk Jurusan Teknik Industri Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta discovered facts that HSS tool is easily worn down as indicated that the tool life was low. Later found that the geometry of HSS tool angel was not set according to the standard geometry which was based on the tool and work material. Furthen more, the standard was not optimized yet since some angles value was still in wide ranges. This study aims to examine the geometry effect of HSS tool angel in the lathe process of aluminum low alloy experimentally. There was an experiment with Randomized Block Design method to analized tool angels effect on tool’s temperature. The considerate factors in this experiment is the kappa angle (κr), the gamma angle (γo), and the material diameter as a block. Level of kappa angle (κr) in this experiment is 90°, 75°, and 45°. Level of gamma angle (γo) in this experiment is 30°, 26°, 22°, 18° and 14°. Level of diameter material in this experiment is 31.5 mm, 29.9 mm and 28.3 mm. Replication done twice. The raising temperature of active field tool is a variable respon as well as indicator of tool life tool. The experiment result, showed that all of considerated was the geometry influenced the raising temperature of tools. Combination geometry of tool angel that chosen in this experiment is combination between kappa angle 90° with gamma angel 18° and combination between kappa angle 45° with gamma angel 30°.
