    Abstract

    Binti Muflikah. S1200007. 2006. The implementation of English Learning at the Elemtary School in Salatiga (A Study of Ethnography). Pascasarjana Program of Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The Study was intended to find out the implementation of English Learning at Elementary School in Salatiga, covering the objective of learning, model of syllabus, the form and procedure of learning activity, the material of learning, the evaluation of the students’ learning achievement, and the role teachers and studens in learning activity. The research was conducted at SDN Salatiga 06 and SDN Sidorejo Lor 02 in Salatiga, Central Java. The research was qualitative in the from of ethnography. The subjects of the study were the two English teachers and their students. The data were collected by using observation, interviews, and document analysis. The data were analyzed by using technique continuously through domain, taxonomy, component, and thematic analysis. The validity of data was tested by lengthening the time of study and triangulation. The result of the study showed that English learning at elementary school in Salatiga was implemented as the local conten subjects. Related with the implementation of English learning was brought forward the amount of dimension. Those were: 1. The objective of learning English in order to make the students had a positive attitude and perception and had the language skill (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in a simple used. 2. The model of syllabus used the thematic syllabus. Language performance and language competence were taught integrative under certain topics or themes. 3. The form of learning was task-based learning, done classically. Meanwhile, the procedure of learning was done through for steps of activites. Thoose were: to make the learning design, and carry out pre-activity, whilst-activity, and postactivity. 4. The materials of learning consisted of the main material and the development material. The main material was taken from the English curriculum of Kanwil Depdikbud, Prov. Jawa Tengah. Meanwhile, the development material was taken from other references, the materials were made by the teachers, and materials which sourced from the students. 5. The evaluation of the students’ learning achievement is to know the English learning achievement. The implementation of evaluations was classified into five parts. Those were the procedure of evaluation, kind of evaluation, tool of evaluation, and form of the implementation test. The procedure of evaluation was implemented through whilst-test and post-test. The kind of test was carried out in oral test and written test. The tool of evaluation was the questions should be done by the students as written test. The question were taken from text book, students’ xix work sheet, and the questions were made by the teachers. The form of the implementation test was given through formative test and summative test. 6. The role of teachers in learning activitiy was very dominant: to explain materials, give task, control class, evaluate students’ learning achievement. 7. The role of students in learning activity was depended on their teachers’ instruction. They had the little opportunity to train and use English.
